Edit Records in a Shared View

In early March 2022, Airtable gave us the ability to edit records in a shared view. For three glorious hours our thoughts were filled with possibilities, until they abruptly ripped the feature away and announced that it was granted in error.

But this feature is paramount to the workflows of so many Airtable users. How can we get the same functionality without racking up a bill with a handful of 3rd-party tools?

In this tutorial, I walk you through the process for allowing non-users to edit your Airtable data from your shared view. We break this down into 5 easy steps...

1. Create a new table with a form that matches the fields you want people to edit. Also include a text field for the Record ID.
2. Prefill the form with the info from each record in your first table. Prefill the Record ID and hide this field.
3. Add this prefill formula to a button in your first form.
4. Create an automation that takes a new record from the form submission and updates the original record.
5. Create shareable views for the different people who need to see/edit this data.

This may seem like a lot of steps, but the end result is undeniably powerful. Give this a try and start sharing views with folks without adding them as users to your Airtable base!
