Exploring the Gantt Chart in Airtable

Gantt Charts are a commonly used tool in project management, so it’s no surprise that Airtable recently added these as an option as a Block. (Blocks are one of those ‘pro’ subscription features and they allow you to visualize your data in customizable ways.)

As is true with most blocks, you must first tell Airtable in which table and view your underlying data resides. From there, you have a few options in setting up your Gantt Chart – namely dates, dependency fields, grouping, and colors. In our video I highlight the features for dates, dependency fields, and colors, allowing you to explore the grouping feature on your own (it’s straightforward and simple to understand)

For dates, the block works as you might intuitively expect. You can move the records in your Gantt Chart and have the underlying data automatically updated to reflect those changes. You can reorder events, dragging and dropping as needed.

Regarding the dependency feature, Airtable has allowed you to label one or more other tasks as either dependent or reliant. This is done using a ‘link field’ within your data set, allowing you to establish these rules of dependency.

Lastly, the color feature allows you to take more control over the visualization of your Gantt Chart. There are a few options for this and in this tutorial I walk through the second option, “by view.” This allows you to grant a color schema to your chart that reflects a color schema you’ve already established in one of your views.
