Fillout Calculating Payment Totals
Sep 11, 2024Are you in need of a robust form software? Do you want to learn how to add calculations to your form? If yes, then this guide is just for you! Here, we'll break down how you can create a calculation within your form using Fillout software. By the end of this blog, you'll be enabled to calculate a total amount due and charge people that amount based on how they answered previous questions in the form. This tutorial is perfect if you're interested in collecting payment in your form and calculating a variable amount each time.
The Magic of No Code Tools and Automation
Automation can significantly make your life easier by saving countless hours and ensuring your data remains clean and free from human mistakes. Leveraging no code tools can help you unlock endless potential and allow for powerful automation that operates in the background without needing any maintenance. One such tool is Fillout, a favourite form software for many businesses and certainly the star of this blog.
Dive into Fillout: Setting up the Form
To get started, you will need to have Fillout open. If you don't have it yet, consider signing up and follow along. Our goal is to create a new form from scratch. Let's choose a theme (for this example, we'll pick the coral theme) and give our form a name, such as "demo for price variables".
The first step involves figuring out what the customers are buying. We'll create a dropdown for different purchase options—thing one, thing, two, thing, three. Adding a number field will allow customers to select the quantity of their purchase. For an added versatility to your form, you can even apply validation patterns to ensure customers do not select a quantity greater than a certain number.
Make it Snappy
By opting for a half-width on the purchase options and quantity fields, you can make your form snappier and more succinct.
Calculating Your Total
The interesting part begins as we enter the domain of calculations. Inside your Fillout browser, in the bottom right corner, click on the logic button. Add a new calculation, and let's name it "total". The initial value can be anything—preferably large to ensure that there are no errors leading to a zero total.
The rule can be set up such that it calculates the value of a purchase. For instance, if option one costs $10, and the customer buys two units, the form will calculate the total as $20. Repeat this step to set different values for different conditions.
Bringing it all Together
Remember how we first named the calculation “total”? Let’s rebrand this to “thing value”. Next add a new calculation named “total”. This new “total” will take the value of “thing value” and multiply it by the quantity to produce the final total for the form.
Checking Out
For the final step, add a payment page. Depending on the product that customers are buying, you can automatically generate a product name and description.
Finally, for the price, you’ll need to include a reference to your “total” calculation. Connect the form to Stripe, publish the form and open it in a new window.
