How to Find and Replace data in Airtable
Dec 05, 2022Find and replace is a common function, but it can be a bit tricky to implement in a database. This video tutorial walks through three methods for finding and replacing data in Airtable, ranging from simple to slightly more complex. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, so learn all three choices so you can pick the optimal method for your needs!
Find/Replace with a Select Field Overwrite
When using a select field, either single or multi, performing a find/replace is easy! First, find the option that you wish to replace and then simply update the data within the field settings. Once you save your changes, all of your records will reflect the new information.
Find/Replace with a Formula
You may wish to write a simple formula to find and replace your data. Using the SUBSTITUTE() function, you can search a field for specific text and update it in your formula. Once your formula showcases your desired output, you can perform a simple copy/paste of the data to update your desired field.
Find/Replace with a Script
Airtable has created a great script that is simple to install using the Airtable Extension. Once you've added this script, you'll need to first point it at the table and field where your data lives. From there, the script prompts you to tell it what "old" data you're looking for, as well as what "new" data you want to replace it with. From here, you're presented with a preview of your changes. If you choose to move forward, your data will be instantly updated as shown!
