How, when, and why to use a Junction Table in Airtable

Apr 05, 2021

I often get questions about how to properly structure tables inside a database. Sometimes these questions are incredibly complicated and require some very difficult architecture, but thankfully that's not the typical case! The vast majority of the time, when questions come up about confusing database architecture, the answer can be found inside a JUNCTION TABLE.

Junction Tables are simple to create and they give you advanced capabilities. When you build a direct connection between two tables, it won't allow you the level of detail that you often require. In such cases, building a third table that combines the former two tables is the solution - this third table acts as a junction between the other two and grants you a level of granular detail that a direct link from A to B doesn't allow. Instead, you build a link from A to C and B to C, resulting in unique intersections!

If this sounds complicated, don't worry - this video breaks down the steps to creating your first Junction Table. Also, don't miss the second half of the video where I showcase using a script that Airtable published that will keep your Junction Table populated with your unique data intersections!
