Triggering Airtable Automations with Webhooks

airtable Jan 02, 2023

Webhooks for automation can be intimidating for those who are new to them. However, they are a great way to get two different programs to communicate with each other. In this video, we're going to break down how to accept an incoming webhook to trigger an Airtable automation.

So, what exactly is a webhook and why would we use one? A webhook can be thought of as a private communication channel between two different applications, similar to a secret phone number. Let's say you want to build an automation in Airtable that is triggered by something happening in Stripe, like an invoice being created. If you search through the Airtable triggers, you may not find Stripe listed. However, with a webhook, you can still establish a connection between Stripe and Airtable. The key is that both tools must have the ability to use webhooks. In the case of Stripe, it does allow for webhooks.

To set up a webhook, you will need to copy the webhook URL provided by Airtable and paste it into Stripe as the address for the "phone call." When the trigger event occurs in Stripe, it will send the information to the specified URL, which Airtable will receive. It may sound complicated, but it's actually quite simple once you get the hang of it.

In summary, webhooks can be a useful tool for connecting different programs and automating certain processes. While they may seem intimidating at first, they are relatively easy to set up and can greatly enhance your workflow.
